Victorian corsets are structured corsets modelled on nineteenth-century lingerie and outerwear that shape the waist into the era's characteristic hourglass silhouette. This collection features women's overbust and underbust styles in black, burgundy and brocade, combining historical tailoring with the dark aesthetic of Castle Gothic. Below we outline the types, materials and ways to wear them, so you can more easily choose a corset to suit your figure and outfit.

Victorian overbust corsets

An overbust corset covers the bust and is worn as a standalone top. It shapes the waist and supports the bust, so it is put on instead of a top or bra. Victorian versions feature a higher front cut, decorative lacing and often a high collar or straps, giving them a more covered, historical character than classic gothic corsets.

Underbust corsets and waist-cinchers

An underbust corset ends below the bust and is worn over a blouse, shirt or Victorian dress. It is the most versatile type, as it layers easily and requires no cup fitting. Narrower models — waist-cinchers — focus purely on shaping the silhouette and work well as an accent piece worn over other garments.

Lace and brocade corsets

Victorian corsets are most commonly made from brocade with an embossed ornamental pattern that echoes the upholstery fabrics of the era. Alongside these you will find models with a lace overlay as well as velvet versions that deliver a deep, matte black. The structure is maintained by steel or spiral bones, and the circumference is adjusted with back lacing, typically on a ribbon.

Victorian corset vs. gothic corset

A gothic corset is a broader category in which black colouring, lacing and dark details are the defining features, regardless of historical inspiration. A Victorian corset adds a specific historical reference: ornamental brocade, a higher cut and period-style embellishments. A wider selection can be found in the gothic corsets collection, and other pieces in the same aesthetic are gathered in our Victorian clothing collection.

How to wear a Victorian corset

Wear an overbust as a standalone top with a long skirt, or over a dress to accentuate the waist. An underbust looks best over a white jabot shirt, creating a layered, courtly look. For less formal outfits, pair the corset with a simple gothic dress and knee-high boots.

Victorian corsets are usually sized one to two sizes smaller than your actual waist measurement, as the lacing is meant to cinch the figure. Most styles are also available in plus sizes. Exact measurements, bone type and fabric composition are listed on each product page.
